A few years ago we lived in Tulsa, Oklahoma, affectionately known as “Tornado Alley”. One of the things I learned during my time there is that tornadoes have a habit of always coming at night when you’re comfortably snuggled in and asleep. The tornado siren goes off and wakes you from your lovely slumber every time, every single time. Ok, maybe that’s not quite true, maybe they do come during the day as well, but it feels true. Anyway, one night my husband woke my son and I up and told us to get some pillows and blankets and go to the bathroom because there was a tornado in the area. So in my half-awake stupor I grabbed my pillow and blanket and joined my son and our dog in the bathroom. We sat there in the darkness for a few moments and then Nathan asked “do you want me to turn on the light?”, “no” I responded, “because I don’t want to fully wake up.” It wasn’t long before we got the all clear and we headed back to bed.
The next day the Holy Spirit brought the words I spoke back to my memory, “I don’t want to fully wake up”. It reminded me of Romans 13:11-12, “This is all the more urgent, for you know how late it is; time is running out. Wake up, for our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. The night is almost gone; the day of salvation will soon be here. So remove your dark deeds like dirty clothes, and put on the shining armor of right living.” I feel like the church has been asleep, we have been in a comfortable stupor of social Christianity when God is calling us to wake up and embrace powerful Christianity. We have been nodding off and not recognizing the dangers around us, the spirit of anti-Christ that is invading our government and the world through organizations such as ISIS. But most importantly we don’t see the lost around us, those who need to hear of the redeeming power and saving grace of Jesus but no one has told them.
So wake up! Shake off the things that keep you in your stupor. We don’t follow a social gospel but a powerful living God that wants to envelope our lives with his truth, love and freedom so that we in turn can share it with others!
“…wake up the mighty men!” Joel 3:9
